Episode 19

Johnny Knoxville

Johnny Knoxville is known for his outrageous stunts and his ability to make people laugh at his pain. This time he comes to the attic and gives everyone an idea just how painful that pain can be. This episode was not meant for those with a weak stomach (you'll know the part when you get to it). It's a painfully funny episode of Armchair Expert.

What's this all about?

One of the best parts of this episode is when Dax finds out that Johnny had absolutely no beef with him whatsoever. Dax had thought PJ (Johnny) was not very interested in being friendly with him since PJ never talked to him at parties. Sounds like the two of them are friends after this episode. Listen to all of the social awkwardness here.

What did they say?

  • Dax announces that Armchair Expert Merch starts to ship out.
  • @7:41 “You did the most kind and manly thing for me.” Johnny talks about the time while camping Dax fixed his heavily dented Suburban. It’s good to know that Dax has a dent repair kit wherever he goes.
  • @9:25 “I had these routines that took ten minutes.” Dax mentions his bathroom routine as a kid for the first time.
  • @15:23 “You had a bulletproof vest on and you got shot.” Dax and Johnny talk about his early video of him shooting himself with a bulletproof vest on.
  • @19:02 “Like what magazines were you writing for?” Johnny mentions how he wrote for Bikini magazine and Big Brother. Dax talks about how Vice would have been a good fit if it was around during that time.
  • @22:57 “When did you start doing drugs?” Johnny goes through his journey of drug use. Starting as a kid with asthma and finding a love for hospitals.
  • @24:40 “I love Hunter S. Thompson.” Johnny details how he came to doing crazy stunts. It begins with a love for Hunter S. Thompson and gonzo journalism
  • @30:04 “Oh, I want to be Bukowski, so I’m killing it.” Dax chooses his heroes to follow. They include Bukowski, Hunter S. Thompson and Outlaw Country singers like Waylon Jennings. Two have been covered in previous recaps.
  • @35:42 “24 Episodes.” Johnny explains how the Jackass series begins and ends quickly, but seems to last longer than 24 episodes. It also includes how the movies allowed the Jackass crew to continue doing dangerous stunts that they couldn’t do on TV. Brad Pitt’s appearance is mentioned.
  • @40:31 “She saved me.” Johnny talks about how his daughter prevented him from going to far over the edge with his drug use. He explains how telling her now about how she saved his life would end up being a very tough conversation.
  • @42:31 “What a lucky coincidence that Spike Jonze is in your circle right?” Dax and Johnny discuss the genius of Spike Jonze, and both mention movies and music videos that he has done in the past.
  • @45:27 “I felt that way at the end of Action Point too.” Johnny talks about the inspiration for his movie Action Point, the real life amusement park nightmare called Action Park. This is considered to be the most dangerous amusement park in the U.S.. This movie ends up being just as dangerous to shoot.
  • @50:49 “By the end of the film they could only film one side of my face.” Johnny goes over the worst injury that he sustained while filming Action Point. A warning to those with weak stomachs, this story is pretty ugly.
  • 1:07:16 “It really started with me doing Idiocracy in Austin.” Dax talks about his friendship with Mike Judge during the filming of Idiocracy, and his competition with Johnny for his attention. They also both share a friendship with Jimmy Kimmel. Dax believes that Johnny doesn’t like him, but it ends up Johnny really just doesn’t like crowds.
