Episode 5

Jimmy Kimmel

He has a show called Jimmy Kimmel Live, so you may know him from that. If not, he used to do a couple of shows called The Man Show and Win Ben Stein's Money. He sits down with Dax and talks about his early career and what got him behind the desk of a late night talk show. He's funny, Dax is funny, you can imagine hilarity ensues.

What's this all about?

This episode contains stories about hard work and perseverance. While Jimmy may have willed a tsunami into existence, he can not will the career that he has made for himself. Through his early beginnings on radio and Win Ben Stein’s Money to hosting the Academy Awards, Jimmy made it to where he is through working hard. There’s a reason why Jimmy became the surprise hit of late night, and it wasn’t because he got lucky. Listen to it here.

What did they say?

  • @1:10 “Well, there’s no door to the bathroom.”  Monica points this out as Jimmy and Dax talk about the attic space. Dax points out that the issue with the bathroom is Kristen’s from way back in Episode 2. We also quickly learn that Jimmy is cool with peeing outside.
  •  @4:24 “I wind up posting pictures of pancakes that I made.” Dax and Jimmy discuss social media preferences. Neither cares much for twitter anymore. We learn that Jimmy likes to follow chefs and the Super 70’s on Instagram. Dax is most likely following some kind of dirtbike account.
  • @7:59 “I read a 550 page book about tomatoes.” Jimmy talks about his great appreciation for the tomato. We also find out that Jimmy makes a mean marinara.
  • @12:38 “This is it, the tsunami is coming.” Jimmy wills a tsunami in Bora Bora and recalls his evacuation experience. Spoiler Alert: The wave was maybe two feet.
  • @22:17 “There’s no way I would have gone to Bora Bora had you told me that dog story.” Dax tells the story about how he had a harrowing experience swimming from island to island where feral dogs live. Jimmy luckily did not hear this story before his trip to Bora Bora.
  •  @29:57 “I thought I was going to be Bukowski.” Dax mentions Bukowski again. He talked about Charles Bukowski in Episode 2.
  • @32:15 “I accidentally played the clarinet” Jimmy tells the tale of how became a clarinet player. Dax asks him to compare himself to greats like Benny Goodman. Jimmy says that he’s really low on that list.
  • @43:38 “It was more like a bar fight.”  Dax and Jimmy feel shameful for watching a “janky” version of UFC. After hearing the description, we totally understand why.
  • @1:03:16 “They’re going to offer you a late night talk show.” Jimmy recounts how Jimmy Kimmel Live came to be.
  • @1:09:34 “You’re kind of  mean to–you like to play jokes on people.” Dax recalls how Jimmy played a joke on him at the end of Dax’s party. It involves a coffee pot and a timer.
  • @1:22:54 “You’re having a fight with the guy in front of the 7-Eleven who’s got a parrot on his shoulder.” Dax and Jimmy discuss how they decide to take a stance on political issues.
  • @1:35:24 “You could do Australian.” Dax laments that many of his impressions are not OK to do. This is the first mention of Lucifers Pizza
