Episode 16

Joel McHale

The sharp-witted Joel McHale from The Joel McHale Show with Joel McHale stops by to say hi after coming straight from the gym. His biceps bulge as he sits down with Dax to talk about meeting his wife, playing football, and having dyslexia. It gets straight up weird when the discussion about Kristen Bell's pinworms stop the wife swap idea.

What's this all about?

Joel McHale has “read” a lot of books, and by that we mean he has listened to a lot of books. This well-read comedian talks mostly about how overcame his struggles with being labeled a “slow starter” while in school. It ends up he had dyslexia just like Dax, and look at both of them now! They may not be able to read a teleprompter, but they are both hysterical in this episode of Armchair Expert. Listen to it here.

What did they say?

  • @7:20 “Have you read Devil in the White City?”  Dax and Joel discuss the Erik Larsen novel Devil in the White City. It takes place in Chicago during the World’s Fair in the late 1800’s. Dax has an unsettling admiration for one of the characters.
  •  @10:47 “I read this book called Dark Matter and the Dinosaurs?” Joel talks about his enjoyment of listening to books rather than reading them. Joel and Dax both share having Dyslexia. Dark Matter and the Dinosaurs can be found here.
  • @31:13“So we’re going to punish this person who might have a ton to contribute to society.” Dax and Joel talk about societal punishments when it comes to artists and great thinkers when they do something that goes against the norms of society. The two of them bring up Henry Ford being an anti-semite, Michael Jackson being an alleged pedophile and John Lennon being a bad father to his kids. They also bring up Picasso, Martin Luther King Jr. and JFK.
  • @57:09 “I want to ask you about being labeled a slow starter–what impact that has had on your full adult life?” Joel talks about the motivation that comes from being called a “slow starter”, and how he found what did work for him and leveraged those assets to move forward.
  • @59:38 “I was either going to be on Punk’d or Blue’s Clues.” Dax mentions how he almost got the part of annoying guy that talks to a dog on Blue’s Clues all while being in the running for Punk’d.
  • @1:00:57 “I worked at Larchmont Wine and Cheese when I got here.” Joel talks about how he had no money when he got to LA and how he made sandwiches at Larchmont Wine and Cheese. Dax and Monica love the sandwiches there.
  • @1:04:46 “It took me 4 hours to get through 20 minutes of jokes when The Soup first started.” Joel explains how he was able to deliver jokes on The Soup while not being able to read the teleprompter due to his dyslexia.
  • @1:06:57 “This deserves someone to support this.” Dax admires that Joel worked on Ryan Hansen’s show on Youtube Red.
  • @1:23:44 “I’m worried about the pinworms.” Joel stops Dax’s wife swap theory by mentioning Kristen having pinworms.

These are the facts...

There is no fact check for this episode. Dax will explain in the next one why that is. His stepfather passed away around this time.
